Football Club Sponsorship or Player Partnerships? A Guide for iGaming Brands
Start with your market, usable rights and content plan before choosing the partnership.
Evaluate club sponsorship when the brief calls for recurring brand touchpoints across a season. Evaluate a player partnership when the brief centres on an individual and campaign content. The better choice depends on the market, contracted rights and your ability to activate them. Fame, follower counts and signing fees alone cannot establish whether a partnership will attract valuable players.

1. What are you actually buying?
Dimension | Club sponsorship | Player partnership |
|---|---|---|
Main asset | Club identity and recurring touchpoints | Individual profile and creative expression |
Negotiable rights | Designation, marks, physical or digital inventory | Likeness, shoots, appearances or social posts |
Best-fit brief | Sustained presence among relevant football audiences | A campaign built around a recognisable individual |
Common gap | A club deal does not automatically secure individual player endorsement | A player deal does not automatically include club, kit or match rights |
This is a procurement framework, not a description of every contract. Map each planned activity to a specific permission and deliverable.
2. Real examples: look beyond the deal title
Stake’s 2022 announcement described an Everton partnership with shirt, venue and digital touchpoints. It illustrates how a club package can combine several placements; a new proposal still needs an inventory-level review. [1]
In 2015, PokerStars announced Cristiano Ronaldo as a brand ambassador and referred to advertising campaigns and appearances. It illustrates a different approach built around an individual. [2] Neither announcement establishes acquisition costs or long-term player value, nor confirms that the original arrangement remains in place today.

3. Confirm these five areas before signing
Market and term. Specify territories, languages, channels, expiry and the treatment of existing content after the term ends.
Deliverables. Define shoot time, photo and video outputs, posts, appearances, revisions and approval deadlines.
Advertising use. Distinguish website, organic social and paid-media permissions. Check likeness, club marks and kit elements separately.
Reuse. Address vertical cuts, subtitles, language versions, raw footage, further editing and AI synthesis explicitly.
Exclusivity and change. Define competitors, categories, scheduling changes, reputational events and termination arrangements.
4. Budget for activation, as well as the agreement
Separate the rights fee, production, activation, compliant media distribution, project management and measurement. Securing a designation while leaving too little to produce and distribute the work can undermine the entire plan.
Before comparing quotes, define a practical output plan: for example, a brand film, short edits, website and social images, and an agreed usage period. These are planning examples, not promised quantities. Match the scope to the budget, contract and approval requirements. With limited resources, complete one market and one content programme before expanding.
5. How should an iGaming brand judge the return?
Level | What to observe | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
Brand | Relevant reach, branded search and direct visits | Compare periods while accounting for media and fixture effects |
Content | Qualified viewing, visits and continued asset usability | Identify creative themes and messages worth extending |
Conversion | Registration, first deposit, active play and D30/D90 value | Assess cost alongside retention and net contribution |
Keep attributed conversions and incrementality separate. Where practical, use comparison markets or phased launches to distinguish the partnership from promotions and fixture-driven interest. A lower first-deposit CPA is insufficient if retention and player contribution deteriorate.
6. Historical deals are not a current approval
The Premier League set the withdrawal of front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship for the end of 2025/26. ASA guidance also makes clear that permission to use club marks does not make advertising automatically compliant; relevant rules, including strong-appeal restrictions, still apply. [3] [4] Confirm the target market, operator eligibility, specific rights and proposed creative before procurement.
Frequently asked questions
Does a larger player following guarantee better results?
No. Compare audience relevance, usable rights, distribution and downstream value.
Can a signed partnership be advertised on every social platform?
Do not assume so. Contract rights, local rules and platform approval requirements are separate.
Which option costs less?
There is no universal answer. Compare the total cost for equivalent markets, terms, deliverables and usage.
